Soft Tissue Masses Showing Low Signal Intensity on T2-weighted Images: Correlation with Pathologic Findings

Abstract: Objective: The aims of this article are to differentiate soft tissue masses showing low signal intensity on T2-weighted images (T2WIs) according to the histopathologic findings. Conclusion:To know relatively small numbered soft tissue masses with low signal intensities on T2WIs adding characteristic location, morphology, signal intensities on other sequences might be helpful for differential diagnosis of mostly nonspecific soft tissue tumors on MRI.

“…Our case showed a cavitary lesion of slightly high SI with rim-like hypointensity on T2WI. Considering chronicity of our case, rim-like T2-shortening may be related to hemorrhage and fibrosis ( 7 ). Pathologic analysis found multistage hemorrhage with hemosiderin-laden histiocytic accumulation and pericapsular organizing fibrosis ( Fig.…”

“…From a histopathologic perspective, it is estimated that the cellularity of the tumor increases as the Fuhrman grade increases. T2 hypointensity in high-cellularity tumors is common in the case of lymphoma, 33,34 and this tendency is considered to be the cause of the relatively low T2 signal intensity of high-grade ccRCC.…”
