This experiment aimed at verifying the effect of different diets and thermal environments on the performance, carcass yield, and diet digestibility of 21 to 42-day-old broilers. A total number of 288 21-day-old male Ross broilers were distributed in a 2 x 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, with six replicates, including the following factors: two environments (TNE - thermoneutral: 21-25ºC and 73% RH; CHS - cyclic heat stress: 25-32ºC and 65%RH), and two diets (control: 2.4% soybean oil and 19.5% protein; summer: 4.0% soybean oil and 18.5% protein). In TNE, two additional treatments were included with feed restriction of birds fed both the control and summer diets (pair-feeding), thereby maintaining the same feed intake level for both types of diet. Diet did not influence performance, dry matter and protein digestibilities, or carcass and part yields. TNE birds had better performance (p<0.001) as compared to CHS birds, but FCR was not different. CHS birds had lower breast yield (p<0.0001), and higher thigh yield (p<0.02) than TNE birds. In the pair-feeding treatments, environment did not influence performance, but dry matter digestibility was significantly lower in CHS (p<0.03), whereas protein digestibility was not affected. The difference in feed intake was the main responsible factor for the variation in the performance of heat-stressed birds

Dois experimentos foram conduzidos no Setor de Avicultura do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Lavras, com o objetivo de determinar o valor nutritivo do resíduo da própolis para a alimentação de frangos de corte. No primeiro experimento, determinou-se a energia metabolizável do resíduo da própolis, utilizando o método de coleta total de excretas, segundo metodologia de Sibbald e Slinger (1963), utilizando 16 galos adultos com peso médio de 2500 + 100 g, alojados em gaiolas de metabolismo. Foram utilizadas duas rações com oito repetições de uma ave. As duas rações foram: (1) ração-referência à base de milho e farelo de soja e (2) 80% da ração-referência mais 20% do resíduo da extração da própolis. O valor de energia metabolizável aparente foi de 941 Kcal de EM/kg de MS. Ainda foram encontrados, no resíduo, 19,76% de proteína bruta, 26,76% de extrato etéreo e 14,41% de fibra bruta. Na fase de 1 a 21 dias de idade, para a variável consumo de ração, não houve efeito significativo para níveis de resíduo e para a interação níveis x sexos (P>0,05); no entanto, houve efeito significativo somente para sexos (P<0,01); o ganho de peso foi significativo para níveis e para sexos (P<0,01) e não houve interação entre níveis x sexos (P>0,05). Houve aumento no ganho de peso com nível de inclusão de até 2,86% (LRP) de resíduo na ração para ambos os sexos, observando-se ainda que, nesse período, a adição do resíduo da própolis proporcionou piora na conversão alimentar para machos e fêmeas. Na fase de 1 a 42 dias para consumo de ração, houve efeito significativo para sexos (P<0,01) e para a interação níveis x sexos (P<0,05); porém, não houve efeito para os níveis de resíduo (P>0,05). houve efeito significativo somente para os machos (P<0,05) que apresentaram um consumo máximo de 4,93% (LRP) de inclusão do resíduo na ração. O ganho de peso para machos e fêmeas nessa fase decresceu linearmente e também aumentou de forma linear para conversão alimentar em ambos os sexos, com a adição do resíduo na ração. O uso do resíduo de própolis até 2,86% na ração aumentou o ganho de peso na fase de 1 a 21 dias e, na fase de 1 a 42 dias, o uso do resíduo da própolis na alimentação de frangos de corte reduziu o ganho de peso e piorou a conversão alimentar dos frangos de corte de 1 a 42 dias. Isso ocorreu provavelmente devido ao teor de fibra presente no resíduo (14,41%) e ceras (26,76%).

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the inclusion of vegetable oils with different fatty acid content in starter and pre-starter broiler diets. In Experiment I 480 1-to 9-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were fed diets containing corn oil (CO), acid corn oil (ACO), linseed oil (LO) or coconut fat (CoF). Chicks were distributed according to a factorial 2x2x2arrangement (2 free fatty acids -FFA ) x (2 n6:n3 ratios) x (2 medium-chain fatty acids levels -AGMC). Performance responses and dry matter (DMM), crude protein (CPM), and crude fat (CFM) metabolizability were evaluated. In Experiment II, 480 1-to 20-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were offered the free choice of 2 different diets: with no fat addition, or with 10% addition of the following fat sources: CO, LO, CoF, soybean soapstock (SBS), acid soybean oil (ASO), or acid cottonseed oil (ACtO). Performance responses and diet selection were evaluated. In experiment I, there were no significant effects of the diets on performance, DMM, or CPM; however, the inclusion of FFA depressed CFM. In experiment II, there was a marked preference of birds of the diets with fat inclusion, leading to the selection of diets with more than 3100 kcal/kg ME in the period of 1 to 20 days, independently of fat source. The broilers selected the high fat and energy diets since the first days of age, which resulted in better bird performance. INTRODUCTIONThe inclusion of fats in feeds positively influences broiler performance (Vieira et al., 2002;Pucci et al., 2003), and enhances feed palatability (NRC, 1994). The composition of the fatty acids added to diets affects body fat composition in broilers (Waldroup & Waldroup, 2005), and therefore body fat growth pattern can be modified by dietary fat (Crespo & Esteve-Garcia, 2002).Birds fed diets with high saturated fatty acids from animal origin deposit relatively more mesenteric and abdominal fat as compared to other sites of the body (Crespo & Esteve-Garcia, 2002). The increase in the proportion of saturated fatty acids in broiler diets causes weight gain depression and worse feed conversion ratio, as well as reductions in fat and fatty acids digestibility and energy metabolizability (Zollitsch et al., 1997;Dänicke et al., 2000). On the other hand, diets with high polyunsaturated fatty acid content promote lower body fat deposition (Crespo & Esteve-Garcia, 2002).The physiological capacity of birds during the first post-hatching days limits fat absorption (Carew et al., 1972), and the limited fat digestion seems to be caused by insufficient secretion of bile salts and lipase (Krogdahl et al., 1985).
