The objective of this study was to evaluate CO2, N2O and CH4 fluxes and C fixation in the soil-plant system, in an area with different managements of eucalyptus harvest residues. Before the experiment was set up, a plot was selected at the end of the third rotation (5 years) and harvested using the Harvester + Forwarder system. After harvest, the coppicing system was adopted and three types of residue management were established: 1. Maintenance of all harvest residues and litter from the previous rotation (HR+L), 2. Maintenance of litter from the previous rotation (L), 3. Removal of harvest residues and litter from the previous rotation (WR). Soil gas flux was sampled 5 days before harvest and at 4 times (distributed along the dry and rainy seasons) over 22.3 months. To collect the gases, PVC chambers were introduced into the soil to a depth of 5 cm in the planting rows and inter-rows. Subsequently, the gas samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. To evaluate C inputs in the system, the quantity of C in the plants and organic matter content in the first ten centimeters of soil were quantified at the end of the experiment (22.3 months). There was higher CO2 equivalent flux in the soil in the area with HR+L at 0.3 and 9.3 months after harvest, with no differences between the treatments WR and L. CO2 equivalent fluxes were similar among all treatments in the samplings performed at 15.8 and 22.3 months after harvest. No differences were observed in the treatments regarding organic matter content in the soil and C fixation in plant biomass.

Urease inhibitors (UIs) and nitrification inhibitors (NIs) still have limitations in increasing crop yield. Therefore, to improve the application effect of inhibitors, the combination of seaweed extracts (SE) from different sources and inhibitors was added to urea to provide a theoretical basis for the development of a new generation of efficient stabilized urea fertilizer with both biostimulant and inhibitor technologies. The combinations were tested in outdoor pots with no N- fertilizer (CK), application of urea alone (U) as control, and kelp polysaccharide (KP), margin polysaccharide (MP), N−(n−propyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NPPT), dicyandiamide (DCD), and combinations of SE with inhibitor were added to urea to make eight fertilizer prototypes. Compared with KP, MP showed better application effect, with significantly higher grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) (P < 0.05). Compared with the addition of inhibitor alone, the combinations of NPPT with KP and MP, respectively, had opposite effects on urea−N transformation, meanwhile NPPT+KP had a positive effect. However, NPPT+MP significantly decreased yield, plant nitrogen uptake, and NUE (P < 0.05); DCD+MP decreased plant N uptake and NUE to some extent. Therefore, the addition of NPPT with KP and DCD with KP to urea significantly improved yield when planting maize in black soil.

Extensive research has been performed into the effectiveness of nitrification inhibitors (NIs) in preventing N losses; however, tropical agriculture has been underrepresented in recent meta-analyses. Here, we apply a meta-analytic approach using data from 50 articles to identify the impact of NIs (DMPP, DCD, and DCD + NBPT) on crop yield, N2O emissions, soil NH4+ and NO3− concentrations, and NH3 volatilization in subtropical and tropical regions of Brazil. In addition, the survey includes information about location; climate zone; cultivated crops; soil pH; soil organic carbon; soil texture; experimental method; soil management; irrigation; fertilizer source, rate, and type; and NI type and rate. Overall, the data set showed that NIs increased crop yield and soil NH4+ concentrations by 3 and 60%, respectively, whereas N2O emissions and soil NO3− concentrations were reduced by 62 and 31%, respectively. Ammonia volatilization was not changed by NI application. However, the combination of a NI with a urease inhibitor decreased such losses by 39%. The effectiveness of the NIs was highest in irrigated fields, fine-textured soils, and mineral N sources. Moreover, NI performance in Brazil was found to be similar in tropical and subtropical climates, and was also comparable to values previously reported in meta-analyses, including those conducted in temperate climates. Therefore, NI application is indicated to be an efficient strategy to delay nitrification and mitigate N2O emissions in tropical agroecosystems.
