High soil pH can lead to Mn2+ and P deficiency and yield losses. In addition, it is unclear which process, nitrification‐induced acidification of bulk soil or nitrification inhibitor‐driven rhizosphere acidification, is more effective in increasing Mn2+ availability and shoot concentration. Thus, this topic was investigated in this study. Moreover, we also evaluated if applying NIs can avoid P deficiency in soil with high pH and high buffering capacity. Two greenhouse experiments were carried out to investigate the impact of applying 3,4‐Dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) in sandy soil subjected to the application of different lime rates, simulating several soil pH and buffering capacity conditions. The utilized lime rates were 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 g CaCO3 kg−1. The measured variables were bulk and rhizosphere soil pH, Mn2+ and P availability, maize biomass production, as well as Mn and P shoot concentrations. DMPP significantly reduced shoot biomass by 10% in unlimed soil; however, it promoted the overall shoot biomass by 30% in limed soil in both experiments. In addition, DMPP decreased the overall Mn shoot concentration by 24 and 21% in experiments I and II, respectively. In contrast, DMPP increased the overall P shoot concentration due to rhizosphere acidification by 24 and 17% in experiments I and II, respectively. The DMPP application did not avoid P deficiency under the highest lime rate (4 g CaCO3 kg−1) despite alleviating it. In conclusion, the application of NIs is not beneficial for increasing Mn2+ shoot concentration and, when performed to increase P availability in high pH soils, should consider the likelihood of causing Mn deficiency.

Flood irrigated rice, in addition to using large volumes of water, is one of the main causes (~30%) of methane (CH4) emissions from agriculture. New cultivation technologies in lowlands, such as ridge-furrow, enable the use of a smaller volume of water in rice cultivation compared to traditional flood irrigation and higher soil oxidation, which can impact the emission of CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O). The expansion of the use of the ridge-furrow system in southern Brazil occurs because it has been one of the systems responsible for the expansion of alternative crops, such as soybean and corn in rotation with rice. The ridge-furrow promotes adequate drainage of the soil surface and irrigation of crops, minimizing damage from excess and deficit water in lowlands. Thus, the objective of the work was to evaluate the emission of CH4, N2O, partial global warming potential (pGWP) and rice grain yield in a ridge-furrow system in rotation with soybean. The trial was carried under field conditions at the Ricetec Experimental Station, in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 crop seasons in Capão do Leão, Southern Brazil, taking advantage of the infrastructure of ridge-furrow established for soybean in rotation in the previous season. Was used an XP117 RiceTec rice hybrid with a 130-day cycle. The treatments consisted of different portions of the furrow: upper (wet soil); intermediate (saturated soil) and bottom portion (flooded soil). Rice cultivation in the ridge-furrow system reduced CH4 emissions by 34% and partial global warming potential by 30%. Rice grain yield levels remained high in the ridge-furrow system. Thus, the ridge-furrow irrigation contributes to increasing the sustainability of rice production as it enables a significant reduction in CH4 emissions and a more efficient in the use of water.

Climate change has been intensifying soil drying and rewetting cycles, which can alter the soil microbiome structure and activity. Here we hypothesized that a soil drying-rewetting cycle enhances biodegradation and, hence, decreases the effectiveness of nitrification inhibitors (NIs). The effectiveness of DMPP (3,4-Dimethylpyrazole phosphate) and MP + TZ (3-Methylpyrazol and Triazol) was evaluated in 60-day incubation studies under a drying and rewetting cycle relative to constant low and high soil moisture conditions (40% and 80% water-holding capacity, WHC, respectively) in two different textured soils. The measurements included (i) daily and cumulative N2O-N emissions, (ii) soil NH4+-N and NO3−-N concentrations, and (iii) the composition of bacterial soil communities. Application of DMPP and MP + TZ reduced the overall N2O-N emissions under drying-rewetting (-45%), as well as under 40% WHC (-39%) and 80% WHC (-25%). DMPP retarded nitrification and decreased N2O-N release from the sandy and silt loam soils, while MP + TZ mitigated N2O-N production only from the silt loam soil. Unexpectedly, between days 30 and 60, N2O-N emissions from NI-treated soils increased by up to fivefold relative to the No-NI treatment in the silt loam soil at 80% WHC. Likewise, the relative abundance of the studied nitrifying bacteria indicated that the NIs had only short-term effectiveness in the silt loam soil. These results suggested that DMPP and MP + TZ might trigger high N2O-N release from fine-textured soil with constant high moisture after this short-term inhibitory effect. In conclusion, DMPP and MP + TZ effectively reduce N2O-N emissions under soil drying and rewetting.
