“…Only China's total NPK fertilizer consumption decreased from 458.0 to 396.9 kg ha −1 in this period, but the crop production index did not decrease simultaneously (FAOSTAT, 2021; World Bank, 2021), indicating that approximately 60 kg of pure nutrients ha −1 is overapplied in China. This value is consistent with the results of Zheng et al (2021), who reported that the 2018 Chinese N and P surplus values were 50.3 and 18.6 kg hm −2 , respectively.…”

“…These regulations were established because it has been recognized that the accumulation of a large amount of luxury nutrients (especially N and P) in the soil is not conducive to agricultural production or ecologically sustainable development (Steffen et al, 2015;West et al, 2014). In comparison, there are many reports of huge amounts of soil nutrient accumulation, loss, and soil quality degradation caused by excessive fertilization in China, which seriously threaten food and environmental security (Chen et al, 2022;Huang, Xu, Ridoutt, Wang, & Ren, 2017;Khan et al, 2018;Yin, Zhao, Li, Cheng, & Liu, 2018;Zheng et al, 2021;Zhu et al, 2020). Chen et al (2014) and Zhang, Chu, et al (2020) reported that reducing fertilizer input by smallholders in China had no significant impact on crop yield.…”
