Nitrofurazone‐loaded PVA–PEG semi‐IPN for application as hydrogel dressing for normal and burn wounds

Abstract: Hydrogels have been used in a wide variety of biomedical devises, particularly in the field of drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing. In this study, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)–polyethylene glycol (PEG) semi‐interpenetrating hydrogel network (IPN)‐based wound dressing system containing nitrofurazone (NFZ) was synthesized by chemical crosslinking technique. The introduction of PEG to PVA matrix led to reduction in the water vapor transmission rate, which in‐turn resulted in improved healing activit… Show more

“…50) and the cumulative release percentage of NFZ at various times was determined based on the calibration curve (eqn (3)) which obtained from different concentrations of NFZ from 0.0001 to 0.01 mg mL À1 in PBS (pH 7.4). The test solution was replenished with 1.0 mL fresh PBS.…”

“…41,42 Sericin is a good biomaterial because of its specic functional properties such as biocompatibility, antioxidant, moisture absorption, antibacterial, UV resistance and biodegradability. 50 The drug release proles could be controlled by adjusting the drug amount in the PLLA/sericin blend ber layer and pure PLLA ber layer. Moreover, an electrospun three-dimensional PCL/ sericin porous nanobrous scaffold was produced and the hydrophilic capability increased with the sericin addition, which improved human primary skin broblast cells adhesion and proliferation on the scaffolds.…”

“…The cumulative mass percentage‐time curves for the drug (curcumin) released in distilled water from the hydrogels with the various amounts of the nanoclay are shown in Figure . Although the pH of chronic wounds could be in the range from 5.5 to 8, the drug‐releasing behavior of the hydrogel samples with the application for healing normal wounds were usually evaluated in a neutral environment such as distilled water applied in this research. Moreover, it should be noted that as reported by other researchers, the PVA hydrogels are not so sensitive to pH stimuli and a treatment is necessary to obtain the pH sensitive PVA hydrogels …”

“…It is well established that, wound healing requires certain ideal conditions, such as a suitable microenvironment (free of pathogenic microorganisms), inflammation control (dosage control 2 drug control) 10 that can be accomplished through the use of nontoxic polymeric materials with low immunogenicity. These materials can favor the partial pressure of oxygen, 11 which helps to improve revascularization, migration, and replication of fibroblasts, in addition increases the rate of collagen production. 12 Polymer systems in the form of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) are composed of at least one chemically crosslinked polymer network and a linear polymer (uncrosslinked).…”
