Nervilia is an orchid genus of approximately 80 ephemeral taxa that are widely distributed throughout the subtropical and tropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and Oceania. Scientific information and research materials gathered from Bali are scarce. While trekking around Bali, we encountered a few representatives of this taxon. This led to further investigation of the genus and its occurrence in Bali, which is summarized in this article. New records of N. concolor and N. punctata from Central Bali have enriched previously known sites, and as species that appear ephemeral often go unnoticed this is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the geographic distribution of this genus.

Puspitaningtyas DM. 2018. Orchid exploration in Mount Bintan Besar Protected Forest, Bintan Island, Riau IslandsProvince, Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 1081-1088. Sumatra is one of the main islands in Indonesia. The biodiversity is higherthan Java, but still below compare to Borneo and New Guinea. About 1,118 species of orchids are found growing in Sumatra, which41% of these are endemic to Sumatra. The exploration activities were conducted at Gunung Bintan Besar Protected Forest, Bintanisland-Sumatra. Orchid exploration was conducted in this area to collect living plants for ex situ conservation purpose. Orchid inventoryto record orchid diversity in this area, based on plant collection by purposive random sampling. The results of the study recordedapproximately 23 orchid collection numbers found in that area. These were representative of 15 genera and consist of 14 species ofepiphyte orchids and 9 species of terrestrial orchids. Most orchids found in this area are lowland orchid which are very common inSumatra. Dendrobium metachilinum Rchb.f., Dendrobium leonis (Lindl.) Rchb.f. and Plocoglottis lowii Rchb.f. are unique orchidsspecies found on this island.

Dendrobium, one of the largest genera of tropical orchids, is grown commercially on a large scale with an important economic impact in several ASEAN countries.Dendrobium orchids can be grown in a wide range of climates, but flower production is best under tropical conditions. Due to being the most popular orchid for cut flower production, many hybrids of Dendrobium have been produced with colorful and attractive blooms. Cut flowers of Dendrobium are popular worldwide. In addition, many Dendrobium cultivars can be grown as flowering potted plants and for other purposes such as in medicinal applications and for use in decorative products. Postharvest physiology and technology are important in maintaining the quality of both cut flowers and potted plants from production sites to the marketplace. Plants of the Dendrobium genus also contain a wide diversity of bioactive compounds that can be developed into medicinal and cosmetic products. This review describes the botany, cultivation, postharvest physiology, handling and utilization of Dendrobium.
