New population-based references for birth weight, length, and head circumference in singletons and twins from 23 to 43 gestation weeks

Abstract: Population-based birth size references are available for the evaluation of birth size. Accounting for plurality and parity improves the accuracy of birth size evaluation.

“…Statistical analyzes were performed using SAS software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA, Version 9.2). To balance the two groups (gestational diabetes yes/no), patients were matched for age (< 35 years, ≥ 35 years) and BMI classes (< 18 kg/m 2 , [18-25 kg/m 2 [, [25][26][27][28][29][30] kg/m 2 [; ≥ 30 kg/m 2 ). A patient with glucose intolerance (case) was paired with a normal glucose tolerant woman (control) by the global optimum algorithm using the method of the propensity score [7].…”

“…Preterm birth was defined as childbirth at gestational week 37 or earlier. The infant was considered to be SGA when the sex-and parity-specific birthweight was more than two standard deviations (SDs) below the mean gestational weight for the Finnish reference population, 24 and considered to have LBW when the birthweight was <2500 g. One-and 5-minute Apgar scores of ≤6 and newborn vein pH < 7.15 were considered to be low. Stillbirth was defined as fetal death from 22 gestational weeks onwards.…”

“…The inclusion criteria for the control group were delivery at full term and birth size appropriate for gestational age as birth weight and length being between –2.0 and +2.0 sex- and age-specific SDS by the current Finnish growth reference [21]. Children with a history of abnormal glucose tolerance in first-degree family members were excluded from the control group.…”
