New normal: two aspects of adipose tissue in COVID-19—treat and threat?

Abstract: Introduction: Adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) can be an important alternative in COVID-19 prevention, treatment, and subsequent sequelae repair. However, ACE-2 plays a common role in the pathogenesis of adipocyte hypertrophy and COVID 19. Areas covered: In this 'Perspective,' the author would like to emphasize the use of adipose tissuederived stromal cells in COVID 19 and the issues that clinicians should pay attention to in fat graft applications in terms of adipose tissue-RAS relationship. The new norm… Show more

“…This system plays an important role in adipose formation. Angiotensin II stimulates lipogenesis and decreases lipolysis in white adipose tissue, leading to adipose hypertrophy and lipid deposition, which is related to inflammation, insulin resistance, and obesity [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ]. Moreover, 51% of COVID-19 patients presented with hyperglycemia [ 53 ].…”

“…ACE2, an important enzyme of RAS, is known to be the main molecular anchoring point for the viral entry of SARS-CoV-2. The binding of SARS-CoV-2 to ACE2 and the following disturbance in the RAS system has shown to be involved in the initiation of endothelial and adipose dysfunction, and neuronal sensitization [ 41 , 42 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 62 , 63 ]. As described above, this could potentially induce pain and OA-like changes in the joint and bone.…”

“…This innovative delivery method may be a very important approach. Copcu [7,8] stated that stromal cells could potentially be used in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COV-ID-19) and similar conditions. It has been reported that it can potentially be used in prevention, treatment, and sequelae repair.…”

“…Classically described as an energy reservoir that stores lipids, the adipose tissue is now recognized as an endocrine organ that participates in a wide variety of physiological and pathological processes [8,10]. Studies demonstrating the ability of this tissue to secrete several factors that play a role in immunological responses have shown its close association with a number of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, type II diabetes, obesity [11][12][13][14] and recently the SARS-CoV-2-induced inflammatory storm [15][16][17][18][19].…”
