New Insight into Polydopamine@ZIF-8 Nanohybrids: A Zinc-Releasing Container for Potential Anticancer Activity

Abstract: Despite the initial evidence on the role of zinc and zinc transporters in cancer prevention, little attention has been paid to the zinc-derived compounds. In the present work, we reported a strategy to prepare a kind of zinc-releasing container with enhanced biocompatibility and release dynamics using ZIF-8 nanocrystals as the sacrificial templates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrated that the ZIF-8 nanocrystals were gradually etched out in the aqueous media within 48 h, resulting in h… Show more

“…Up until now, mussel-inspired coating with the in-situ polymerization of dopamine has raised increasing interest and has been frequently used to coat various substrates, such as glass, metal, polymer, and nanocarbon materials [20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28]. Recently, there have been some reports on the application of dopamine chemistry to energetic crystal processing, such as HMX, hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), and 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) [29,30,31].…”

“…Similarly, the templates used for the synthesis of core-shell particles are also often found in the range of microns [9,10,18], which restricts their use in the field of drug release. In recent years, the synthesis of hollow polymer nanocapsules has been reported [5,17,19,20]. Furthermore, by using natural and biocompatible polymers such as chitosan and carrageenan for their preparation it is possible to obtain hollow polymer capsules at the nanometric scale.…”

“…The in vitro studies on HCT8 and HEK293 cells showed that the NHs produced better cytotoxicity than ZIB-8 in the HCT8 cell while having a similar level of anticancer activity on the HEK293 cells. The NHs also internalized more levels of zinc in both the cell lines, and it was further confirmed by the in vivo studies [ 102 ]. Mehnath et alsynthesized the charge reversal and pH-responsive gold-poly(bis(carboxyphenoxy)phosphazene) PCPP nanohybrids loaded with CPT (camptothecin) and tested their intracellular drug delivery potential on breast cancer cells.…”
