“…There has been some indication of an increased risk of total leukaemia and CLL among individuals involved in metal working occupations in previous studies 3 11 28 29. Consistently, in our study an increased risk of lymphoid leukaemias and CLL (data not shown) was found for turning/metal engineering.…”

“…The main task of more susceptible to biocides when compared to bacteria and fungi inhabiting the biofilms in these settings. There is no possibility of eradication (complete elimination) of biofilms and this leads to a phenomenon (often observed in practice) of rapid re-growth of microorganisms population after cleaning and disinfection of MWF tanks and circulation systems [2,3]. In the European Union, the regulations regarding the permissible level of microbial contamination in MWFs have not been yet established.…”

“…The GM-UAW cohort has been recognized for its quantitative exposure assessment of metalworking fluids by type. 610 Other strengths of this cohort include the diversity of the cohort and its size, as well as the length and completeness of the follow-up (less than 4% loss to follow up).…”

“…811 Straight MWF contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can react with DNA molecules, potentially forming adducts that, if not repaired, can lead to mutations following cellular replication and, eventually, clinically apparent cancer. 6810 Also, in straight MWF, N-nitrosodiethanolamine 12 can form. This byproduct of nitrite and amine additives is carcinogenic in animal models 13 and may have similar potential in humans.…”
