New Evidence from Brazil on Trade Liberalization and Productivity Growth*

Abstract: This article presents evidence on the positive effect of international trade on productivity growth using industrial level data preceding and following Brazil's trade liberalization in 1988-90. Our data reveal large and widespread productivity improvement across industries after barriers to trade were drastically reduced. Econometric results confirm the association between trade liberalization and productivity growth and show that the impact was indeed substantial: The observed tariff reduction in the period b… Show more

“…The trade data we use reports both bilateral import and export flows, whose ratio gives an indication of transport costs, as the former include "Costs, Insurance and Freight", whereas the latter are typically registered "Free On Board". 14 We also include some measure of panEuropean changes in trade policy, such as a binary variable capturing the advent of the Single Market in 1992 and the re-entry of the Lira in the European Monetary System in 12 The measure is the ratio of the imports weight (in tons) to their value. This approach follows Hummels (2001).…”

“…A PIA apresenta um espectro de tamanho de empresas mais amplo do que a PIM-pf e uma atualização da composição setorial mais adequada. Este elemento é particularmente relevante uma vez que existe grande discussão sobre a influência das reformas institucionais da década de 90 sobre mudança estrutural (Reinhardt e Peres, 2000) e incremento da produtividade (Ferreira e Rossi, 2003). Dois argumentos costumam ser utilizados para explicar os efeitos da abertura comercial sobre a produtividade.…”

“…1 The mixed empirical evidence of the effect of unions on productivity covers a variety of industries including manufacturing, construction, and services in the United States and United Kingdom. A few papers, notably Ferreira and Rossi (2003) and Galiani and Sturzenegger (2008), have studied the effect of unions in Latin America. Our empirical approach, that uses data before and after a policy change, is similar to the one used in Ferreira and Rossi (2003).…”
