New Antioxidant C-Glucosylxanthones from the Stems of Arrabidaea samydoides

Abstract: Three new C-glucosylxanthones, 2-(2'-O-trans-caffeoyl)-C-beta-d-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (1), 2-(2'-O-trans-cinnamoyl)-C-beta-d-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (2), and 2-(2'-O-trans-coumaroyl)-C-beta-d-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (3), were isolated from the stems of Arrabidaea samydoides, in addition to three known C-glucosylxanthones, mangiferin (4), 2-(2'-O-benzoyl)-C-beta-d-glucopyranosyl-1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone (5), and muraxanthone (6). Their chemical s… Show more

“…The presence of two catechol moieties on pedalitin provided even higher activity towards ABTS than for the reference compound quercetin (IC 50 4.12 mM), as observed previously for glucosyl-xanthones. 23) Similarly, this trend has also been observed for sorbifolin, which showed lower IC 50 (5.7 mM towards ABTS, and 13.5 mM towards DPPH) than its 6-O-glucosyl derivatives 1 and 4, thus confirming the importance of the 5,6-dihydroxy moiety on ring A for enhanced antiradicalar activity of 7-methoxyflavones.…”

“…3B, 2005 systems which have been deprived from sufficient amounts of endogenous antioxidants as in some cardiovascular diseases, tumors, inflammation, ulcer and aging. 9 As part of our ongoing projects aiming the phytochemical investigation of São Paulo State flora, [10][11][12] the EtOH crude extract from leaves of N. grandiflora collected at Jureia State Park, Atlantic Forest, have been subjected to bioassay-guided fractionation using the β-carotene test on TLC for the detection of antioxidant compounds. 13 Pure compounds isolated from this extract were further evaluated for their free radical scavenging activity towards the stable free radical DPPH and compared to standard compounds rutin and BHT.…”

“…Thus biological compounds with antioxidant properties could be expected to significantly contribute to the protection of myocardial cells and tissues against deleterious effects of ISO [11] . Nevertheless, numerous synthetic antioxidants have expressed serious limitations while showing pro-oxidant, toxic or mutagenic effects, thus, raised the attention of researchers towards the naturally derived antioxidants [12] .…”
