New antenna mode generation based on theory of characteristic modes

Abstract: In this article, the effect of actual antenna elements on rectangular chassis modes is investigated. The study is performed on three different antenna types, that is, printed inverted-F antenna (PIFA), printed monopole, and printed loop antennas. For the first time, we show that the presence of the antenna generates a completely new mode called the "antenna mode" (compared with chassis mode modifications as in other existing works). The new "antenna mode" only depends on the shape or geometry of the antenna an… Show more

“…In that case, it is considered as an important guiding parameter for the antenna design to determine the appropriate feed point and feed structure. To gain deeper insights about such analysis, we must understand the relationship between characteristics modes and energy [52][53][54][55][56]. The energy that is stored in the form of reactive power (P X ) & radiated power (P R ) gives the eigenvalues (λ n ).…”

“…TCM analysis is also a good tool for antenna placement studies for platforms that are inherently part of the radiator. In recent times, TCM has been applied in designing many wideband antennas [18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. However, many of these antennas lacked stable radiation patterns while trying to achieve wide IBW.…”

“…It provides fascinating physical insights into current and radiation phenomena of each mode of an arbitrarily shaped radiating body taking place in various kinds of antennas and could be efficiently optimized along with choice of feed technique to excite desired modes [4]. Numerous antennas for various wireless communication applications based on TCM have been reported [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. It is used for the analysis and design of different categories of antennas such as an ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas [7,8], planar bevel-shaped and C-shaped monopole antennas [9,10], loop and printed inverted-F antennas [11], and slotline antennas [12] for diverse applications.…”
