Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) may be superior to C-reactive protein (CRP) for predicting the occurrence of differentiated thyroid cancer

Abstract: Objectives. NLR (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio) and PLR (platelet-lymphocyte ratio) are prognostic markers of diff erentiated thyroid cancers. In our study, we evaluated NLR, PLR and C-reactive protein (CRP) for predicting the occurence of diff erentiated thyroid cancer. Th is is the fi rst study that compares NLR and PLR to C-reactive protein indiff erantiated thyroid cancer not only papillary cancer but also folliculer cancer.Methods. Th is study includes 51 papillary carcinoma, 42 papillary microcarcinoma and… Show more

“…However, little is known about the above-mentioned markers in thyroid disorders. Several authors proved that NLR may be a useful parameter in the differential diagnosis of benign thyroid nodules from malignant tumors, especially papillary thyroid carcinoma [ 17 , 37 , 38 ]. Aside from thyroid neoplasms, NLR combined with PLR have been studied as potential indicators of Hashimoto’s disease occurrence, which can allow to distinguish patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis from healthy individuals [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…In a study of prognostic evaluation of NLR, Kim et al reported increased NLR as a negative prognostic indicator for disease-free survival [21]. In 2017, Özmen et al reported that increased NLR and PLR levels were associated with high thyroglobulin, and, hence, poor prognosis [12].…”

“… 8 NLR is already used as an easily accessible inflammatory marker in adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome, 9 spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, 10 ischaemic heart disease, metabolic disease, cancer and other medical conditions. 11 In children, NLR can differentiate between viral and bacterial pneumonia, 12 , 13 and it can be a useful diagnostic marker of acute appendicitis and acute infection. 12 , 14 NLR may also correlate positively with other commonly used inflammatory markers.…”
