Neutron interactions as seen by a segmented germanium detector

Abstract: The GERmanium Detector Array, GERDA, is designed for the search for "neutrinoless double beta decay" (0ν2β) with germanium detectors enriched in 76 Ge. An 18-fold segmented prototype detector for GERDA Phase II was exposed to an AmBe neutron source to improve the understanding of neutron induced backgrounds. Neutron interactions with the germanium isotopes themselves and in the surrounding materials were studied. Segment information is used to identify neutron induced peaks in the recorded energy spectra. The G… Show more

“…Some of these neutrons undergo (n,n') scattering in the Ge crystals of the γ-ray detectors. The effect on γ rays emitted from the recoiling Ge isotopes manifests itself as a high-energy tail of ∼100 keV in the γ-ray spectra [26]. As such, gated γ-ray transitions (582-and 852-keV in our case) that lie on the recoil tails (from 834-and 563-keV 2…”

“…After a muon 4 The energy of gammas from neutron capture on hydrogen in the simulation is ≈ 1 keV higher than the literature value of 2223.26 keV [11]. This bug is already known and was reported to the Geant4 collaboration [21]. tag a signal time window, ∆t Exp S , from 7 µs to 1 ms is opened.…”
