Neurological examination in the healthy term newborn

Abstract: -We carried out a cross-sectional study with a sample of 106 normal full-term newborns examined within 24 to 72 hours of birth. The following findings were evaluated: head and chest measurements, muscle strength, tone, tendon reflexes, superficial reflexes, primitive reflexes, and cranial nerves. All 106 newborns were considered neurologically normal. We found no differences in the neurological examination findings for newborns with different gestational ages. Primitive reflexes and appendicular tone in newbor… Show more

“…In contrast, the incidence rates of weak or incomplete primitive reflexes in full-term infants at around birth have been reported as about 36% in walking, 16% in standing, and 7% in placing, after excluding infants with asphyxia [19], 15% in Galant reflex after excluding infants with cerebral palsy and intellectual disability [20]. And one study revealed some primitive reflexes (lower extremity placing reflex, Galant reflex, positive support, steeping reflex) could be weak or incomplete even at 40 weeks corrected age in pre-term infants and, although the main trend of the primitive reflexes became stronger and more complete with increasing corrected age.…”

“…Nas últimas duas décadas, o advento de técnicas mais avançadas de exames subsidiários não reduziu o valor da avaliação clínica dos recém-nascidos (RN). Na verdade, o uso associado de ambos os recursos possibilitou o aperfeiçoamento de valores de predição de lesões neurológicas, uma vez que a avaliação clínica continua sendo o recurso mais acessível à maioria dos hospitais (6) .…”
