Neurogenic Bladder Repair Using Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Abstract: The normal function of the urinary bladder is to store and expel urine in a coordinated, controlled fashion, the activity of which is regulated by the central and peripheral nervous systems. Neurogenic bladder is a term applied to a malfunctioning urinary bladder due to neurologic dysfunction or insult emanating from internal or external trauma, disease, or injury. This report describes a case of neurogenic bladder following laminectomy procedure and long-standing diabetes mellitus with neuropathy treated with… Show more

“…Under normal conditions, the bladder stores and expels urine in a coordinated, controlled manner as regulated by the central and peripheral nervous systems [24]. Immunofluorescence staining for TH (a classical marker of presynaptic sympathetic innervation) and ChAT (a biochemical marker of cholinergic neurons) were used to evaluate whether efferent nerves (sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves) in the detrusor were altered under diabetic conditions.…”

“…Numerous studies have shown that systemic infusion of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSC) of various kinds [14], as well as sub-types of endothelial progenitor cells [5, 6] obtained from healthy patients, improve the rate and degree of tissue/organ recovery after acute injuries or chronic conditions, thus suggesting that progenitor cells can be used to treat a variety of pathologies [7, 8]. Both autologous and allogeneic cell therapy approaches have been evaluated in preclinical settings.…”
