Neurofibroma of Facial Nerve Presenting as Parotid Mass

Abstract: Neurogenic neoplasms presenting as parotid gland tumors are extremely uncommon. We present the case of a solitary neurofibroma of the facial nerve within the parotid gland occurring in a 36-year-old male who presented with a painless enlargement in the right-side region of the parotid gland over a period of 1 year with normal facial nerve function. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-demarcated round mass within the right parotid. At surgery, a tumor was found involving the main trunk of the facial nerv… Show more

“…of the nerve and involves multiple fascicles composed of Schwann cells, perineurial-like cells, and fibroblasts. The involved nerves may be distorted and often totally replaced and unrecognizable (2). There is a predilection for larger peripheral nerves of the face such as our case originated from infraorbital nerves.…”

“…The left four patients were diagnosed as sporadic plexiform neurofibroma, whose lesions only involved their scalps. Whether the craniofacial plexiform neurofibroma is associated with NF1 or not, the large lesion can cause significant craniofacial disfigurement, put the patients at high risk of psychological disorder and make them seek medical care 4,14,15 …”

“…1 Neurofibroma can demonstrate as multiple lesions as a part of neurofibromatosis syndrome or as a solitary mass. [1][2][3][4][5] Craniofacial plexiform neurofibroma, highly suggestive of neurofibromatosis type 1(NF1), always presents as painless nodule or mass which is most likely to have pigmentation and cause facial drooping. [2][3][4][5] It can lead to cosmetic problems and make the patients seek medical care.…”

“…Neurofibromas of the facial nerve, more common in neurofibromatosis type 1, frequently affect distal branches in the parotid gland but can extend intratemporally. 8 While malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the facial nerve have been reported, parotid tumors with overt or occult perineural spread account for the most common cause of tumor infiltration causing facial paralysis. 9 Histopathologically, facial nerve TN demonstrates disorganized nerve fascicles.…”
