Necessary Usage of Antibiotics in Animals

Abstract: Animals could become sick at any time of their lives, just like all people exposed. Many of the antibiotics administered to animals are identical to or closely drugs used in human. All animal species in general and food-producing animals, in particular, are commonly exposed to antibiotics to treat and prevent infectious diseases or to promote growth. Antibiotics would not be necessary if animals were raised differently under good veterinary and husbandry practices that were less crowded and more sanitary. The … Show more

“…This showed that the drug is still effective and can be considered as alternative options in the empirical treatment of S. aureus infections in the study area. This frequency of resistance observed in these antibiotics may be attributed to their use in the treatment of animals [53] and humans and to earlier exposure of the isolates to these drugs which may have enhanced the development of resistance. This assertion can further be strengthened by the high level of antibiotic abuse in our locality, arising from several forms of self medication and indiscriminate use of antibiotics by both clinicians and patients and poor antibiotic sale behavior such as sale of under dose or substituting brands.…”

“…These antimicrobial residues if present in concentrations above the established maximum residue limits, or if used without appropriate authorization based on scientific assessment of the benefit and risk of the treatment, can present a hazard in products from aquaculture [ 9 ]. In this regard, antibiotics, as hazardous materials, should be applied under the directions of professionals in farms to ensure their withdrawal to the safe limits [ 10 ]. Additionally, strict legislations should be implemented to minimize the misuse of antibiotics [ 11 ].…”
