The monophyly and phylogenetic relationships of the subfamily Microweiseinae were investigated. Twenty‐three in‐group taxa, representing all known genera of Microweiseinae (except for Microcapillata Gordon) were included in a cladistic analysis, based on 45 adult morphological characters. The parsimony analysis of the resulting data matrix supported the monophyly of Microweiseinae, Carinodulini, Serangiini and Microweiseini (inclusive of Sukunahikonini). The recognition of Sukunahikonini renders Microweiseini paraphyletic, and consequently both tribes were synonymized, retaining Microweiseini as a senior family‐group name (syn.n.). Genera and tribes of Microweiseinae are diagnosed thoroughly, illustrated and keys to their identification are provided. The following nomenclatural changes were made: Hikonasukuna Sasaji and Orculus Sicard are synonymized with Scymnomorphus Weise (syn.n.); Gnathoweisea Gordon is synonymized with Microweisea Cockerell (syn.n.); Hikonasukuna monticola Sasaji and Orculus castaneus Sicard are transferred to Scymnomorphus (comb.n.); Smilia planiceps Casey, Gnathoweisea hageni Gordon, Gnathoweisea ferox Gordon, Gnathoweisea micula Gordon and Gnathoweisea texana Gordon are transferred to Microweisea (comb.n). Three new genera are described: Alleniusgen.n. for Allenius californianussp.n. (type species) from Mexico and Allenius ivieisp.n. from U.S.A.; Gordoneusgen.n. (type species Gnathoweisea schwarzi Gordon from U.S.A.); and Cathedranagen.n. (type species Cathedrana natalensissp.n. from South Africa). The first African member of Carinodulini, Carinodulina ruwenzoriisp.n. is described. The genera Microweisea, Coccidophilus, Serangium and Delphastus are well‐known predators of sternorrynchous Hemiptera, such as scale insects (Diaspididae) and whiteflies (Aleyrodidae), and play a significant role in agricultural ecosystems as biocontrol agents. Host data and biological records are summarized for each genus.

The parasitic wasp Encarsia formosa is used in many countries to control an important glasshouse pest, Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Increasing energy costs initiated research about breeding tomato varieties that can be grown at lower glasshouse temperatures than usual. Encarsia formosa is, however, not sufficiently efficient in controlling whitefly at these low temperatures. The great success of this biocontrol method forces us to search for a solution either by selecting cold‐resistant E. formosa strains, or by screening of other parasites and predators. In this paper the current situation with regard to control of whitefly is evaluated, the knowledge about factors influencing the relationship between host and parasite is reviewed, data about other parasites and predators are given, and evaluation procedures of natural enemies are discussed. Zusammenfassung Zur Parasit‐Wirt‐Beziehung zwischen Encarsia formosa (Hym.: Aphelinidae) und Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Horn.: Aleyrodidae). IX. Eine Übersicht über die biologische Bekämpfung der Weißen Fliege in Gewächshäusern mit einigen Vorschlägen für künftige Untersuchungen Die Schlupfwespe Encarsia formosa wird in vielen Landern gebraucht zur Bekämpfung eines in Gewachshäusern wichtigen Schädlings, der Weißen Fliege Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Wegen der stark gestiegenen Energiekosten sind Untersuchungen zur Züchtung von Tomatenvarietäten angelaufen, die bei niedrigerer Gewächshaustemperatur gezogen werden können, als bisher möglich war. Encarsia formosa ist aber nicht fähig, die Weiße Fliege bei diesen niedrigen Temperaturen effektiv zu bekämpfen. Der große Erfolg dieser biologischen Bekämpfungsmethode zwingt nach einer Lösung zu suchen, entweder durch Selektion eines kaltebestandigen Encarsia‐Stammes oder durch Verwendung anderer Parasiten und Prädatoren. In dieser Abhandlung wird die heutige Lage der Bekämpfung der Weißen Fliege erörtet. Es wird eine Übersicht der Faktoren gegeben, welche die Beziehungen zwischen dem Parasiten und den Wirten beeinflussen. Es werden die Daten über andere Parasiten und Prädatoren mitgeteilt und verschiedene Verfahren zur Bewertung der natürlichen Feinde diskutiert.
