Natural bio-based products for wood coating and protection against degradation: A Review

Abstract: Preservation of wood structures against degradation represents an old, and however, a new challenge. Wood, as a natural hybrid composite material, represents a versatile and widely exploited renewable resource for indoor and outdoor applications. Its constitutive biopolymers are subjected to intense and progressive oxidative degradation processes under environmental conditions of exposure, affecting wood’s native durability and generating significant structural and color changes, along with progressive diminut… Show more

“…Moreover, silicon compounds, especially those with amino groups, increased the resistance of the treated wood against decay fungi and molds [ 4 , 6 , 11 , 12 ]. According to literature date, natural substances that are harmless to humans and the natural environment, such as chitosan, essential oils, natural oils or propolis, could also be applied in ecological wood protection [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…Semi-drying and drying oils are a perfect way of forming hydrophobic coatings. The hydrophobic coating with the vegetable oils protects materials not only from the water but also from the destructive effects of microorganisms, termites, and nematodes, and also is the protection against UV radiation [ 4 ]. Therefore, modification processes through chemical and thermal methods are effectively applied to oils of plant origin involved in coating formulations [ 4 ].…”

“…Some of these conventional preservatives have been banned for use in residential areas, such as, chromated copper arsenate (CCA) in Denmark and Indonesia, as it poses a significant health hazard [7]. Natural and bio-degradable preservatives, such as those derived from plant-seed oil and waxes, can serve as an effective preservative on the surface of the wood [8]. There is an ample variety of bio-based preservatives, including essential oils, resins from bark, and biopolymers [8].…”

There is an ample variety of bio-based preservatives, including essential oils, resins from bark, and biopolymers [8]. However, their main disadvantage has been regarded as their mild susceptibility to leaching [8].…”
