Nationwide Program of Education for Undergraduates in the Field of Disaster Medicine: Development of a Core Curriculum Centered on Blended Learning and Simulation Tools

Abstract: In recent years, effective models of disaster medicine curricula for medical schools have been established. However, only a small percentage of medical schools worldwide have considered at least basic disaster medicine teaching in their study program. In Italy, disaster medicine has not yet been included in the medical school curriculum. Perceiving the lack of a specific course on disaster medicine, the Segretariato Italiano Studenti in Medicina (SISM) contacted the Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale in Med… Show more

“…In addition, the inverted classroom methodology has been applied to topics such as geriatric medicine,33 disaster medicine,34 advanced cardiac life support,35 and an elective related to medicine as a business 36. Generally, authors did not allude to temporal considerations related to their applications of the FC in clinical medical student education, as was sometimes the case for preclinical FCs.…”

“…15 Recent objective evaluations prove that disaster education of medical students is still limited, provoking a call for instituting a national medical disaster-training curriculum. 16 17 Looking at the status of this kind of education presently in Europe, Germany is the only country with a well-established curriculum, 18 Italy is in the experimental phase of testing such a programme and using these educational methods in several medical schools 19 with motivated students expressing the clear need to do so. 20 Belgium has a limited introduction of such an educational programme in three faculties, 8 and the Netherlands has no disaster medicine programmes in their medical schools, but one faculty has expressed interest after participating in a recent national survey.…”

“…Therefore, mock drills are one principal form of applied mass casualty training with mock patients or dummies [61]. Moreover, exercises and simulations have been shown to be an effective way to assess different areas of disaster management to test and evaluate performance in, for example, decision making, triage, and patient management [62,63]. One simulation tool, Emergo Train System ® (ETS) [64], was developed in Sweden [65] but is currently adapted for international use in several parts of the world [64].…”
