“…The only article concerned with football coaches' survival time that we are aware of is focused on the case of Brazilian league and found evidence that the experience is quite insignificant in this respect, as the expectations are on shortterm results, the leagues suffering thus from a high turnover (and implying that country specificities ought to be controlled for) (Tozetto et al 2019). Two studies focused on NFL brought proof of the fact that being a non-white increases the coaches mandate, while controlling for other performance metrics (Salaga and Juravich 2020) and that having insubordinate and deviant players will increase the coach's likelihood of being sacked (Foreman, Soebbing, and Seifried 2019). In a recent study focusing on the case of NBA coaches, Wangrow et al (2018) propose a very encompassing survival analysis model in order to account for the determinants of mandate longevity, among the significant factors being team performance (non-linear though), coach's reputation and power within the team structure and expectations of team managers and fans.…”

“…The increasing number of studies examining managerial turnover using sports data consists mainly of two strands. While the first strand studies the determinants of coach changes (e.g., Holmes, 2011;Salaga & Juravich, 2020;Wangrow et al, 2018) and distinguishes in a small number of cases between coach dismissals and quits (e.g., Bryson et al, 2020;Van Ours & Van Tuijl, 2016), the second strand deals with the effect of coach changes on team performance (e.g., Audas et al, 2002;Bykova & Coates, 2020;Paola & Scoppa, 2012). Because this study examines the determinants of coach dismissals and quits in the context of professional football, the literature review concentrates mainly on studies in this research field.…”

“…Fredrickson et al (1988) theorized that a dismissal of the incumbent CEO becomes more likely when a supply of qualified candidates is available for the CEO position. For the context of sports, previous studies investigating the relationship between the availability of alternative candidates for the coach position and managerial turnover report mixed results (Foreman & Soebbing, 2015;Holmes, 2011;Salaga & Juravich, 2020;Wangrow et al, 2018). Candidate availability is calculated as the number of coaches exiting an employment spell in MLS in the previous 3 years and is available for hire at the time a coach exists a spell.…”

“…Bias in sports is a prevalent research topic and scholars have examined potential biases in sport in a variety of contexts (e.g., Pope et al, 2018;Salaga and Juravich, 2020). One context bias has been analyzed in sport is the potential bias of sports officials.…”

“…Biases based on race (i.e., racial bias) continues to be a necessary discussion topic in sports (e.g., Salaga and Juravich, 2020 ; Foreman and Turick, in press ). While racial bias in sports is typically investigated in the hiring and opportunities of players, coaches, and management (e.g., Ducking et al, 2015 ; Foreman et al, 2018 ), racial bias may exist in officiating as well.…”
