Narrative production weakness in Russian dyslexics: Linguistic or procedural limitations?

Abstract: Abstract. The study deals with the impact of non-linguistic factors on narrative production in Russian-speaking dyslexic children. The experimental group consisted of 12 children (age 9-10) with dyslexia and the control group comprised 12 peers without any developmental disorders. The sample was counterbalanced from the perspective of narrative mode, story complexity, and task order. One of the classic methodologies for narrative analysis, i.e. story grammar, was extended in our study by a novel dynamic approa… Show more

“…Narrative analysis (NA) could serve as such a complexand ecologically valid tool (Botting2002, McCabe, Bliss2003) and as an informative predictor for written language acquisition and literacy development (Westerveld et al 2008). Our previous studies (Kornev, Balčiūnienė 2015) have evidenced a huge individual variability in narrative macroand microstructure in dyslexic children.…”

“…For this study, structural complexity (SC) was analysed with a modified version of this measure (Roth, Spekman 1986, Balčiūnienė, Kornev 2016, Kornev, Balčiūnienė 2015, 2017 as being more flexible and sensitive to a child's macrostructural competence. Specifically, each episode was scored based on its inner structure.…”

“…Language comprehension and expression of knowledge through language are required for much of academic performance (Bishop, Edmundson 1987, Boudreau, Hedberg 1999; therefore, in recent years, interest in children's narrative development cross-linguistically has increased. In order to comprehend and produce a narrative, one has to have sufficient cognitive skills, such as a phonological short-term working memory, executive functions (Duinmeijer et al 2012, Kornev, Balčiūnienė 2015, 2017, and the knowledge of an internal structure and a system of rules for generating narrative discourse (Hughes et al 1997). Typically developing young monolingual children begin to produce stories soon after they have formed their first sentences.…”

“…Suprantama, kuo sudėtingesnis tekstas, tuo daugiau ir įvairesnių kognityvinių išteklių bei operacijų reikalauja jo skaitymas (Plaut, Booth 2000). Kai kuriais atvejais (pvz., disleksijos) kognityvinių išteklių ribotumas ar skaitančiojo negebėjimas tinkamai juos valdyti lemia ypač žemus teksto suvokimo rezultatus (Kornev, Balčiūnienė 2015).…”
