Language dominance in bilingual acquisition: A case study of narrative production in Lithuanian

Abstract: The study examines macro-and microstructural characteristics of narrative production in Lithuanian as the first language of a group of Lithuanian-English sequential young (mean age 6;1) bilinguals (n = 12) living in the UK; the control group of monolingual Lithuanian children (n = 12) residing in Lithuania was tested as well. “…Since 2012, fictional stories of TD and PLI monolingual and bilingual children have been analyzed as a semi-structured data of narrative performance; the main macroand microstructural measures (such as story structure, episode completeness, general productivity, lexical diversity, and syntactic complexity) have been evaluated in each of the populations (Balčiūnienė 2012(Balčiūnienė , 2013Balčiūnienė, Kalninytė 2014;Blažienė 2016). For instance, a comparative analysis of narrative production in children acquiring Lithuanian as the first vs. a heritage language evidenced that monolinguals demonstrated greater (p < 0.05) lexical diversity and used a wider range (p < 0.05) of syntactic devices to create story cohesion than the heritage speakers, although a general story length (both in words and utterances) was higher (p < 0.05) in the heritage group (Balčiūnienė et al 2017).
