Nanotechnology-Based Weapons to Combat Human Papillomavirus Infection Associated Diseases

Abstract: Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection will eventually lead to clinical problems, varying from verrucous lesions to malignancies like cervical cancer, oral cancer, anus cancer, and so on. To address the aforementioned problems, nanotechnology-based strategies have been applied to detect the virus, prevent the interaction between virus and mammalian cells, and treat the virus-infected cells, due mainly to the unique physicochemical properties of nanoparticles. In this regard, many nanotechnology-based … Show more

“…As we know, vaccines are developed to protect healthy people from infection by neutralizing antibodies. 2 Smallpox vaccination, using the closely related vaccinia virus, is no longer provided to the general public since 1981. 3 Healthy people do not have neutralizing antibodies in their bodies, leading to a worldwide population increasingly susceptible to monkeypox, cowpox, and vaccinia viruses as well.…”

“…HPV infection is a multi-step process that implies complex interactions of the viral particles with cellular proteins ( 24 ). Persistent HPV infection can eventually lead to clinical problems, varying from verrucous lesions to malignancies like cervical cancer, oral cancer, anus cancer, and so on ( 25 ). Hippo signaling pathway is an emerging signaling pathway that plays an important role in organ size control, tumorigenesis, metastasis, stress response, apoptosis, stem cell differentiation, and renewal during development and tissue homeostasis ( 26 ).…”

“…The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a small (8,000 bp), non-enveloped double stranded circular DNA virus ( Pan et al, 2021 ; Sun et al, 2021 ; Wang et al, 2022 ). Persistent infection with HR-HPVs is highly related with various cancers, including cervical cancer (99.7%), head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (60%), anal cancer (93%), vulvar cancer (69%), vaginal cancer (75%), and penile cancers (47%) ( Yang et al, 2019 ; Meznad et al, 2021 ).…”
