Nanostructuring of Ba8Ga16Ge30 clathrates by sol–gel‐calcination/chemical‐reduction route

Abstract: Nanoparticles (NPs) of Ba8Ga16Ge30 clathrate‐I were synthetized via sol–gel‐calcination/chemical‐reduction route. A solution of the metallic cations was used to prepare an acryl‐amid‐based gel. The gel is dried and calcined to obtain nanocrystalline powders of precursor oxides. The oxides are reduced by reacting with CaH2 to produce the clathrate, which is embedded in a CaO matrix. CaO is removed by a washing step to obtain the clathrate NPs. The shape and size of the precursor oxide NPs can be modified by add… Show more

“…A zT value of up to 1.35 has been reported in Ba 8 Ga 16 Ge 30 , but it is a single-crystal sample. In addition, Tang et al synthesized Yb x Ba 8‑x Ga 16 Ge 30 compounds by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method, and the maximum zT value reached was 1.1 at 950 K. Zhang et al prepared Ba 7.7 Yb 0.3 Ni 0.1 Zn 0.54 Ga 13.8 Ge 31.56 compounds by a high-pressure technique, and the maximum zT value reached 0.91 at 900 K. As we know, pressure can enhance the mechanical stability of the samples . As expected, the zT value of n-type polycrystalline clathrates Ba 8 Ga 16 Ge 30 reached 1.14 at 773 K by the HPHT method .…”

“…Among (Figure of merit) values have been reported. [9][10][11] A conceptual approach to an understanding of the potential of the intermetallic clathrates as thermoelectric materials is provided by the PGEC (phonon-glass and electron-crystal) concept. [12] In addition some type-I clathrates such as K 8 Al 8 Si 38 with a quasi-direct bandgap of ca.…”

“…The current interest in such intermetallic clathrates is mainly due to the promising thermoelectric properties of some representatives; e.g. for Ba 8 Ga 16 Ge 30 considerably high ZT (Figure of merit) values have been reported . A conceptual approach to an understanding of the potential of the intermetallic clathrates as thermoelectric materials is provided by the PGEC (phonon‐glass and electron‐crystal) concept .…”
