Myricetin Isolated From Turbinaria Ornata Ameliorates Rotenone Induced Parkinsonism in Drosophila Melanogaster

Abstract: Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder which affects the elderly population. Free radicals overproduction, oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation and abnormalities in mitochondria are critical mediators of the neuronal degeneration. In the present study neuroprotective activity of myricetin, a flavonoid isolated from brown seaweed Turbinaria ornata have been investigated in rotenone induced experimental PD models of Drosophila melanogaster. Methods:Male fruit flies (Drosophila m… Show more

“…Further, it is confirmed that MYR has capable of inhibiting the glutamate release in the cortical nerve terminal by suppressing of presynaptic Ca 2+ influx [35]. Recent findings reported that MYR has capable of ameliorates rotenone-induced parkinsonism in drosophila [36]. Malathi et al also reported that animals which were exposed to chronic restraint stress showed impaired learning and memory which was restored by Michelia champaca extract [37].…”

“…A flavonoid isolated from T. ornata in rotenone stimulated Parkinson's disease models of Drosophila melanogaster has been checked for the neuroprotective activity of myricetin. Myricetin produces a balance of oxidants and antioxidants, decreases oxidative stress, and inhibits apoptosis to delay neurodegeneration and sustain the dopamine level [66]. More molecular studies will be needed in the future to study myricetin defence processes in Parkinson's disease.…”

“…The several types of phenolic compounds present in the extract act as a dietary supplement and were found to relieve joint-related pain [65]. The methanolic extract was also found to have a protective action on the red blood cells [66]. Another study found that the ethanolic extracts exhibited excellent vascular inhibition in duck CAM assay and serve as potential cytotoxic agents [68].…”

“…Although the ethanolic extract of P. gymnospora has been reported to contain a number of bioactives compared to many other algae, its sulfate content and antioxidant activity were found lower comparatively [45]. The antioxidant and FRSA of the methanolic extract of T. ornata are also already known [46]. The demand for seaweeds has enormously increased recently as it is a source of numerous bioactive compounds that are targeted for biomedical applications as well as the food industry [47].…”
