Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and asthma in children

Abstract: A clinical association between exacerbation of asthma symptoms and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) infection has long been suspected. We studied 80 children aged 5-15 years; 50 with asthma (Group 1) and 30 without an acute exacerbation of asthma (Group 2) for detection of M. pneumoniae by serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on nasopharyngeal aspirates. Our study confirms that lower respiratory tract infections with M. pneumoniae are frequently associated with exacerbations of asthma in children.

“…The low rate of u-B and negative case of u-A in the current study are consistent with the results that showed u viruses caused respiratory diseases in young and middle-aged individuals more than children (43). Some studies have shown that the spread of u with S.pneu causes pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections (44,45). However, in the present study, although S.pneu was frequent in asthmatic children and was associated with the exacerbation of the asthma attacks, there were no u infections in our study population.…”

“…This opportunistic bacterium was detected in 41.5% of the studied children with asthmatic exacerbations, which in consistent with some other studies on adulthood (48). Although H1B, S.aur, S.pneu and C.pneu are more detected in infant and school-aged children, other infection agents are less common in adolescence (45).…”

“…Wiele badań i metaanaliz jasno wskazuje na ścisłe powiązanie pomiędzy infekcjami dróg oddechowych (wirusowymi i bakteryjnymi) a astmą. Zwłaszcza infekcje rinowirusowe, mykoplazmatyczne mogą powodować zaostrzenia astmy u dzieci [15,16]. Jednocześnie -rozpoznana astma wczesnodziecięca, która nie jest niedostatecznie kontrolowana, sprzyja zakażeniom.…”
