“…Such as observation could explain the high mutagenic activity of butadiene (de Meester et a/. 1978) in the Ames test when compared to styrene (de Meester et al 1977). A previous report (Duverger-van Bogaert et al 1978) showed that microsomal mono-oxygenase has an apparent affinity for styrene which is 20 times weaker than that of epoxide hydrolase for styrene oxide.…”

“…Both positive and negative results have been obtained using a metabolic activation system [Busk, 1979;De Meester et al, 1977;Loprieno et al, 1978;Stolz and Withey, 1977;Vainio et al, 19761. In in vivo investigations in mice, the aberration rate in bone marrow cells was unaffected by administering styrene by gavage [Loprieno et al, 19781. In contrast, the rate of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells of rats increased significantly after an eleven-week-inhalation test [Meretoja et al, 19783.…”

“…In vitro investigations showed, that styrene itself has no direct mutagenic activity in any of the bacterial tester strains [Busk, 1979;De Meester et al, 1977;Loprieno et al, 1978;Stolz and Withey, 1977;Vainio et al, 19761. “…The primary metabolite, styrene 7,8-oxide has also been studied in various bacterial tests for mutagenicity. This metabolite was mutagenic to Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae (de Meester et al, 1977). It was also clearly mutagenic to Salmonella commonly used as an evaluation for toxicity in the Ames test.…”
