Muslims Opposing Violent Radicalism and Extremism: Strategies of Swedish Sufi Communities

Perception of Western governments’ hostility to Islam is one of the indicating features of Islamic fundamentalism and, in some cases, is serving as a pull to join extremist groups. In this paper, using data from two waves of a cross‐national survey, we investigate what affects European Muslims’ opinions about Western governments. We find that residential segregation is associated with perceived hostility of Western governments to Islam. Further, we find that Muslims living in segregated neighbourhoods and enclaves have a higher probability of believing that Western governments are hostile to Islam. National origins of Muslim immigrants have a significant impact, with people from African countries measuring less perceived hostility than others. We also find that education is associated with perceived hostility of Western governments to Islam in a non‐linear way. People with the highest and lowest levels of education tend to be less likely to believe that Western governments are hostile to Islam, relative to people with mid‐level education. This non‐linear effect is best explained by education’s differential effects on perceptions of key world events. During the time between 2011 – before ISIS’s announcement of its Caliphate in Iraq and Syria – and 2013, subsequent to that announcement, we see a sharp decrease in perception of Western governments’ hostility to Islam, particularly among more educated European Muslims. We make the case that this decrease can be attributed, in some ways, to the emergence of ISIS. We discuss our findings in terms of theoretical and policy implications.

Indonesia is a multicultural country that has so much diversity, among which is the diversity of religions and customs or cultures. Cultural acculturation has a significant impact on the construction of thought and ritual practices carried out by a society. The purpose of this study was to analyze and analyze the practice of traditional child birth carried out by the community in Nanjung Village, Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The research method used in this study is an ethnographic approach. The author tries to make a visit to the site, then interviewed single information interactively to find the data needed in this study. The data obtained were then analyzed using the theory of acculturation and Islamic religious perspective. The findings prove that the practice of customary childbirth carried out by the perpetrator is a cultural acculturation process. The practice of child birth is at least one way in the context of maximum efforts so that the baby can survive and develop into a pious child

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggagas konsep penanaman sistem imunitas anti-radikalisme pada anak usia dini melalui habituasi dan pendekatan proses pembelajaran berbasis nilai-nilai kepesantrenan. Wacana radikalisme, maupun intoleransi beragama dipandang sebagai suatu bentuk pemikiran yang sangat berbahaya bagi keutuhan negara serta bertentangan dengan nilai-nilai ajaran agama. Lembaga pesantren diharapkan dapat memberikan warna bagi terwujudnya upaya internalisasi nilai-nilai akhlakul karimah bagi anak usia dini. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif, pengambilan data dilakukan berbasis wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Objek penelitian dilakukan kepada Kepala Sekolah dan lima guru di sekolah Raudatul Atfal Nurul Ansor di Kabupaten Bandung. Analisis data menggunakan kerangka Miles dan Huberman. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa membangun imunitas anti-radikalisme dibangun atas empat pilar fundamental: 1) Membumikan Nilai-nilai kepesantrenan seperti menghargai pendapat, menjaga ukhuwwah, toleransi, 2) Penguatan Muatan Kurikulum Program Kegiatan Anak Berbasis Agama, 3) Metode Pembelajaran Berbasis Pendekatan Anak, 4) Habituasi dan Kultur.
