Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis: Combined Surgical Treatment and Liposuction

Abstract: A 47 year old man with a history of alcoholism presented with symmetrical lipomas on the shoulders, neck, and chest. He also had lipomatous areas on the trunk and thighs. He was treated with a combination of surgery and liposuction, and made an uneventful recovery. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of multiple symmetric lipomatosis, a rare disorder only about 200 cases of which have been reported. The aetiology is unknown, but is often seen in patients with a history of alcoholism.

“…Chronic alcohol consumption is the most frequently associated feature, 6 but hypocaloric diet and alcohol abstinence do not diminish lipomatous tissue. Surgical lipectomy, 4 liposuction, 7 or a combination of both 8 are therefore the mainstay of treatment. The use of liposuction for the treatment of MSL avails us of a closed surgical technique, which can be performed under local anesthesia, removing the majority of fatty tissue through a small incision in the skin.…”
