Multipath Effects in Millimetre-Wave Wireless Communication using Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexing

Abstract: Electromagnetic waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have been used for mode division multiplexing in free-space communication systems to increase both the capacity and the spectral efficiency. In the case of conventional wireless communication links using non-OAM beams, multipath effects caused by beam spreading and reflection from the surrounding objects affect the system performance. This paper presents the results of analysis, simulations, and measurements of multipath effects in a millimetre-wave… Show more

“…It is well known that multipath effects caused by beam spreading and reflections of surrounding objects must be considered in wireless communication systems. In OAM-based wireless communications, the multipath effects caused by specular reflection from a plane parallel to the propagation path have been discussed in [161] and [162]. Both simulation and experimental results show that OAM channels with larger have stronger intra-and inter-channel interference due to OAM beam divergence.…”

“…Detecting only a small portion of the radio beam will considerably deteriorate the communication performances and increase the system penalty, which makes RF OAM unsuitable for broadcasting applications [251]. The multipath effect has been studied for OAM radio links as reported in [252]. An analysis, at 28 GHz, of the multipath effect induced by a shiny surface parallel to the communication path revealed that the reflection causes both intra and interchannel crosstalk meaning that the reflected energy due to multipath is coupled not only to a channel with the same , but also to channels with different charges, and leads to distortion of the OAM's wavefront [252].…”
