Objectives: To raise awareness and propose a good practice guide for translating and adapting any hearing-related questionnaire to be used for comparisons across populations divided by language or culture, and to encourage investigators to publish detailed steps. Design: From a synthesis of existing guidelines, we propose important considerations for getting started, followed by six early steps: (1) Preparation, (2, 3) Translation steps, (4) Committee Review, (5) Field testing and (6) Reviewing and finalising the translation. Study sample: Not applicable. Results: Across these six steps, 22 different items are specified for creating a questionnaire that promotes equivalence to the original by accounting for any cultural differences. Published examples illustrate how these steps have been implemented and reported, with shared experiences from the authors, members of the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology and TINnitus research NETwork. Conclusions: A checklist of the preferred reporting items is included to help researchers and clinicians make informed choices about conducting or omitting any items. We also recommend using the checklist to document these decisions in any resulting report or publication. Following this step-by-step guide would promote quality assurance in multinational trials and outcome evaluations but, to confirm functional equivalence, large-scale evaluation of psychometric properties should follow.

Resumo objetivo: realizar a tradução e adaptação cultural para o português brasileiro do instrumento de rastreio de demência Vellore, para aplicação por não-especialistas, na comunidade de baixa escolaridade. método: a tradução e a adaptação cultural se desenvolveram em quatro passos e seguiram as diretrizes estabelecidas pela ISPOr. Inicialmente foi realizada a tradução do instrumento para o português de forma literal após as duas retrotraduções para a língua inglesa que foram realizadas de forma independente e comparadas com a versão original. Resultados: O instrumento final apresentou pequenas modificações em alguns termos usuais, com o intuito de serem facilmente compreendidos em uma população de baixa escolaridade, resultando em alterações semânticas para a adaptação cultural. Conclusão: O Vellore é um instrumento de rastreamento breve, com aplicabilidade em visitas domiciliares por agentes comunitários de saúde ou outro profissional da saúde para o acompanhamento de indivíduos em situação de risco para o desenvolvimento de declínio cognitivo junto a atenção primária. atualmente, o instrumento Vellore está disponível gratuitamente na versão em português brasileiro, e sua validação está em andamento.Palavras-chave: Vellore; Idosos; Cognição; Escolaridade; atenção primária.ABsTRACT objective: Conduct a translation and cultural adaptation of the dementia tracking instrument Vellore into Brazilian Portuguese, to be applied by non-specialists in low-education communities. methodology: The translation and cultural adaptation were developed in four steps and followed the guidelines established by ISPOr. Initially, a literal translation of the instrument into Brazilian Portuguese was done, followed by two independently conducted retro-translations into English, which were then compared to the original English version. Results: The finished instrument contains some small modifications to common terms, with the goal of making it easily comprehensible to a low-education population, resulting in semantic alterations for cultural adaptation.
