Multilevel Predictors of Inconsistent Condom Use Among Adolescent Mothers

Abstract: Overlapping yet distinct risk profiles predicted never or sometimes using versus always using condoms. Factors from multiple levels of influence affected the condom use behaviors of adolescent mothers indicating that multilevel interventions are needed to promote safer sexual practices among these young women.

“…Some of these studies are consistent with the bioecological model, as risk factors are organized according to ecological levels so that they can be targeted both separately and simultaneously (Van Horne et al 2009). Nevertheless, fewer studies (Araújo Pedrosa 2009;Logsdon et al 2008;Van Horne et al 2009) have addressed adolescent pregnancy with an integrated ecological approach that simultaneously focuses on the three main ecological levels of influence and their interactions.…”

“…However, the results of recent national and international investigations (Araújo Pedrosa 2009;Logsdon et al 2008;Van Horne et al 2009) grounded on the bioecological model of development (Bronfenbrenner and Ceci 1994) revealed that factors from multiple ecological levels interact and affect different areas of adolescents' adjustment after pregnancy, reinforcing the importance of theory-based research to capture the maximum variability in the dependent variables studied.…”

“…Several predictors for the use of condoms have been assessed being pregnancy status, partner refusal to use condoms, intimate partner violence, and race/ethnicity predictors for never and sometimes using condoms. Condom use 6 months earlier and church attendance also predicted never using condoms, whereas maternal monitoring was an additional predictor for using condoms [18]. Youths that were classified as insufficient knowledge level on contraception and sexuality were at the highest odd to start earlier sexual activity.…”

“…Some estimates were unstable, for example, that for unprotected vaginal sex. Several additional risk determinants were not available, including partner condom refusal and intimate partner violence, both of which are common among adolescent mothers and associated with sexual risk 9. Lastly, we relied on participants to report partners’ risk behaviours.…”
