“…We follow the protocols suggested by Thorpe et al (2005) and Tranfield et al (2003) to perform this method. Our analysis is achieved by inductively reading and rereading the articles while cycling them to identify and categorize concordant themes that ensure consistency within and across categories of those themes (Jones et al, 2011;Andreini et al, 2019;Ferreira et al, 2021). The review was limited to including articles published in peerreviewed journals, as they are a validated source of knowledge and strongly impact the EBR 35,3 research field (Ordanini et al, 2008).…”

“…If, apart from the above-mentioned dimensions, trends and levels of analysis, we consider the industry context or the decomposition of intellectual capital, it may turn out that intellectual capital researchers face serious challenges that shall determine the final shape of this concept (Martin- de Castro et al, 2019). Moreover, the dynamic transformation of the environment has imposed the need to look at the company and its intellectual capital from a new perspective (Ferreira et al, 2021). They have shown that, despite the need to support research by earlier possessed findings, there is also a need to verify the already accepted theoretical statements and assumptions in different operating conditions.…”

“…Despite this, there remain a wide range of questions yet to be answered both theoretically and in practice. The outstanding issues include the essence of intellectual capital, its structure, measuring and impact on the performance of organisations (Ferreira et al , 2020).…”
