Multigenerational Effects of Early-Life Health Shocks

Abstract: A large literature has documented links between harmful early life exposures and later life health and socioeconomic deficits. These studies, however, are typically unable to examine the possibility that these shocks are transmitted to the next generation. Our study traces the impacts of in utero exposure to the 1918 influenza pandemic on the outcomes of the children and grandchildren of those affected using representative survey data from the US. “…These results are in line with those in Chul Hong and Yun (2017) which uses data from colonial Korea. Richter and Robling (2013) and Cook et al (2018) are other studies that evaluate the impact of the Spanish Flu on multiple generations.…”

“…Pandemics are known to have an immediate and intergenerational health and non-health impact. For, example the 1918 in uenza pandemic had not only taken millions of lives, but also affected the social, economic and health aspects of next generation [29].Therefore, public health response to avert a potential loss due to a pandemic will not only saves lives now, it also improves recovery of the health system and other sectors. Since resources are scarce, information on prioritizing resources at the time of a pandemic to save many lives is crucial to decision makers.…”
