Multifunctional Silane Polymers for Persistent Surface Derivatization and Their Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract: We demonstrate a versatile methodology combining both covalent surface anchoring and polymer cross-linking that is capable of forming long-lasting coatings on reactive and nonreactive surfaces. Polymers containing reactive methoxysilane groups form strong Si-O-Si links to oxide surfaces, thereby anchoring the polymer chains at multiple points. The interchain cross-linking of the methoxysilane groups provides additional durability to the coating and makes the coatings highly resistant to solvents. By tailoring … Show more

“…Both of these metal nanoparticles with bactericidal effects can be affixed on various surfaces for prevention or protection purposes in specific applications such as infirmaries, clothing, different surfaces, food protection and packing, water treatment and so on [15]. In addition to metal nanoparticles, polymeric structures, especially positively charged polyelectrolytes, have antimicrobial properties due to the electrostatic interaction of positive charges with negative charges on the cell wall of bacteria [16,17]. Therefore, positively charged particles can be utilized against different bacteria, fungi and viruses [18,19].…”

“…A glass slide without the polymer was used as a control. The results are expressed as: For disk diffusion method, a total of 100 L of bacteria stock solution (10 6 cfu/mL) was plated on nutrient agar growth plates [23,30,32]. The coated surfaces were placed coating side down on top of the inoculated agar plates and incubated overnight at 37 • C. The grown bacterial colonies were counted using a light box.…”

“…Glass surface were cleaned with Piranha solution (30% H 2 O 2 /70% H 2 SO 4 ) for 5 min. Afterwards, the slides was thoroughly rinsed with distillated water and isopropanol and dried under air [30]. Various solutions of the quaternized polymers in DMF were then coated by using a spin coating technique at 2000 rpm (acceleration of 1000 rpm/s) for 30 s on the glass slides.…”
