A pulse current generator applied in a type of high-yield intense pulsed neutron source, the Dense Plasma Focus (DPF), is designed and developed in this paper. There are three key components in this generator. Each group of capacitors and switches is integrative to meet the DPF's requirements of low circuit inductance. A coaxial multi-channel switch is developed to solve the problems of the switch inductance, the jitter and the electrode erosion. A kind of sectorial plate transmission line is adopted to transfer the high pulse current from the capacitors to the DPF. The following technical parameters of the generator were achieved on dummy load: output current amplitude of ∼560 kA when primary capacitors are charged with 22 kV.

The multichannel switching mode of a controlled multigap switch is studied. The switch is designed for capacitive energy storage, with a charging voltage of up to 100 kV and an energy output time of about 100 ns. The interval between the high-voltage and low-voltage electrodes of this switch is divided into seven series-connected gaps using ball electrodes, and six parallel rows of these ball electrodes allow for multichannel switching. An optical system based on collimators and photodiodes was used to determine the number of channels in the switch gaps. Statistics on the number of channels were collected and the probability of ignition of parallel spark channels was calculated for each of the switch gaps under different operating conditions. We show that both the electrical isolation between the channels and the rate of rise of the triggering pulse significantly affect the number of parallel ignited channels and their distribution over consecutive gaps. At a high triggering voltage pulse rise rate (∼800 kV=μs), a larger number of spark channels are ignited in the switch with electrical isolation between the channels and the characteristics of this switch are better. At a low triggering voltage pulse rise rate (less than 250 kV μs), better characteristics are realized in the switch without electrical isolation between the channels.

In this paper, the design, installation, and performance of a ±100 kV gas switch for linear-transformer-driver (LTD) are presented. LTD demands require gas switches that can be operated at a 200 kV DC voltage, and require trigger jitter and inductance as small as possible. A field distortion switch has been designed based on the L3 switch, the design criteria of switch electric field and trigger system are explained in detail. A two dimensional plasma model is developed to analyze the contribution of trigger system to the closing of gas switch. An experimental platform was built to test the self breakdown and triggered breakdown characteristics of the switch. When the switch is charged to ±100 kV and is triggered by a -120 kV pulse with a 30 ns rise time, the delay time is 78 ns and the jitter is 1.6 ns. A comparative test was done to research the function of UV preionization gap, the test results shown that the UV preionization gap can reduce the switch delay time and jitter, it can effectively improve the trigger performance of the switch. Meanwhile, using the short-circuit discharge, the inductance and impedance were measured, the switch inductance is about 30 nH, and the impedance is varied from 50m to 30m .
