Multi-criteria decision making on the energy supply configuration of autonomous desalination units

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe important energy requirements for the desalination process impose especially in autonomous and decentralized plants supplied by Renewable Energy Sources (RES). In this paper, five alternative energy generation topologies of Reverse Osmosis desalination process are evaluated. The proposed topologies assessed in terms of economic, environmental, technological and societal indices are compared using multi-criteria analysis, namely the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Preference Ranking … Show more

“…Besides, western China was selected as the best alternative by using SAW method. Georgiou et al evaluated 5 alternative energy generation topologies of reverse osmosis desalination process with respect to environmental, economic, social, and technical criteria using AHP and PROMETHEE methods. The direct coupled system was selected as the best alternative for all of environment concerns, economic preference, and equal weights scenarios.…”

“…AHP was developed by Saaty [7], in 1980, and it is extensively applied in problems involving multiple, often conflicting, criteria [34]. The aim of AHP is to define the optimum alternative and to categorise the others considering the criteria that describe them.…”

“…Furthermore, throughout this method, the hierarchy is revealed after the breakdown of the problem, which enables understanding and defining the process itself. It is also suitable for dealing with technological characteristics and future aspects that are not well known [3,34]. It should be noted that AHP cannot directly consider potential associations amongst many components, as it performs poorly when different levels are independent, which implies that the method is unsuccessful in representing the complicated connections among the components.…”

“…A pairwise comparison matrix is filled, referred to as A (Saaty's hierarchy matrix). It contains the performance of each criterion (or sub-criterion) against each other, taking into consideration expert judgment [45].…”
