Assessing Sustainability Performance at the Farm Level: Examples from Greek Agricultural Systems

Abstract: In recent years, farmers and policymakers have faced ample challenges and have struggled to support the sustainability of the agricultural sector. Sustainable agriculture encompasses multiple concepts, and its performance produces extensive debate about data requirements, appropriate indicators, evaluation methods, and tools. Under the European Union (EU) financed project FLINT (Farm Level Indicators for New Topics in policy evaluation), detailed data have been collected at the farm level to provide broader co… Show more

“…The highest GHG emissions were observed in IP (7.71 t CO 2 eq ha −1 yr −1 ), which had a milk productivity close to SPS (18 L milk ha −1 yr −1 ). The implementation of mitigation measures at the farm level, preserving farmers’ competitiveness, has proven to be a feasible and effective strategy to fight climate change 52 …”

“…Agricultural systems can only become sustainable if three factors are considered. These are usually referred to as "triple P": Planet (environmental), People (social), and Profit (economic) (Tzouramani et al, 2020). Multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a coherent methodology that can consider multiple criteria simultaneously in the decision-making processes.…”
