Mulching Affects Soil Properties and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Under Long‐Term No‐Till and Plough‐Till Systems in Alfisol of Central Ohio

Abstract: Agricultural activities emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) and contribute to global warming. Intensive plough tillage (PT), use of agricultural chemicals and the burning of crop residues are major farm activities emitting GHGs. Intensive PT also degrades soil properties by reducing soil organic carbon (SOC) pool. In this scenario, adoption of no‐till (NT) systems offers a pragmatic option to improve soil properties and reduce GHG emission. We evaluated the impacts of tillage systems (NT and PT) and wheat residue mul… Show more

“…Thus, sunflower residue incorporation improves soil moisture retention, enhances nutrient cycling and microbial activity (Alam et al, 2014;Adugna and Abegaz, 2016;Nawaz et al, 2016), and suppresses weeds by physical hindrance, reducing light penetration, and through release of allelochemicals from such residues (Kamara et al, 2000;Khaliq et al, 2014). Because of the above-mentioned advantages of sunflower residues, better seed yield and higher profitability were achieved in spring-planted mung bean in 2014-15.…”

“…In addition, sesbania brown manuring in RWCS improves the soil organic matter and total N, thus increasing the yield of rice and wheat (Ali et al ., ). Maintenance of crop residues improves the soil properties by improving the moisture retention, restoring soil physical properties (Nawaz et al ., ), and enhancing the nutrient cycling and activity of microbes (Singh & Kaur, ; Adugna & Abegaz, ).…”
