Movement Patterns in a Partial Migrant: A Multi-Event Capture-Recapture Approach

Abstract: Partial migration is a pervasive albeit poorly studied phenomenon by which some individuals of a population migrate while others are residents. It has tremendous consequences on seasonal variations of population size/structure and therefore management. Using a multi-event capture-mark-recapture/recovery (CMR) approach, we assessed seasonal site occupancy, survival and site fidelity of a partially migratory diving duck, the Common pochard (Aythya ferina), in an area potentially including both local breeders and… Show more

“…Winter survival is lower than survival at other stages of the annual cycle for a number of migratory birds (e.g. red-knot Calidris canutus canutus [ 54 ], houbara bustard Chlamydotis undulata [ 55 ], common pochard Aythya ferina [ 56 ]).…”

“…With the recently developed extensions, one can often find state-based CJS analyses where survival is also considered a nuisance process and primary scientific interest lies with the transitions between states. See Gourlay-Larour et al (2014) for a recent example. With this in mind, practicing ecologists are using the state-based CJS framework and the associated HMM formulation to analyze complex state transitions such as the combination of geographic location and reproductive or disease status.…”
