“…Thirteen porcine hearts were fixed “ in toto ” in 10% formalin for 10 days, after which tissue blocks (of average size 2 × 3 × 2 cm) were prepared from the middle parts of the upper, middle, and lower segments of the anterior interventricular region, covered by epicardium and containing the epicardial tissues, including the stems of AIB and AIV as well as the adjacent myocardium of the interventricular septum and the anterior walls of both the left and right ventricle. The ventral surface borders of the segments were determined by the course of the terminal parts of the three largest left ventricular veins (Figure 1) (for more details see Patzelt et al, 2019).…”

“…For our previous study on the vasa vasorum (Patzelt et al, 2019), in seven intact hearts solution of India ink diluted at a ratio of 1:1 with normal saline at 26 C was injected by hand pressure into the aortic ostium of the left coronary artery. After the entire circulatory bed had been filled with the dye, the hearts were fixed for 10 days in 10% formalin, after which they underwent histological examination, following the same procedure as the previous group.…”

“…Potassium hydroxide is a very strong alkaline, with strong hygroscopic characteristics, and is perfectly soluble in water, which enables a relatively easy preparation of a working solution of the expected concentration. The usefulness of KOH solutions in corrosion has been proven in many scientific studies [11,22,25,28,37,43].…”

“…During recent years, we have studied the existence of the vasa vasorum in the anterior interventricular branch of the left coronary artery (AIB) in porcine hearts (Patzelt et al, ), and in explanted failed aortocoronary bypasses (Stingl et al, ). We used vascular injections and several classic histological techniques to investigate these vessels.…”
