Objectives:The aim of the present research is to elucidate the anti-oxidant and anti-tumor activities of the mucin extracted from Ereminia desertorum snails´ mucus against two types of tumor cell lines; human colon adenocarcinoma (CACO-2) cells and human hepatoma (HepG-2) cells. Methods: Both cell lines were treated with Ereminia desertorum snails´ mucin and the oxidative markers were measured in culture media and cells by biochemical and gene expression analysis using RT-PCR. The tumor suppressor gene expression was also evaluated using RT-PCR. Results: The culture media of HepG-2 or CACO-2 cells treated with the extract have high significant increased levels of catalase, SOD, GSH and total antioxidants. Apart from SOD in CACO-2 cells that didn't differ from untreated cells. Also, Gene expression levels (2 ^-ddct ) of the antioxidant markers in HepG-2 cells; GSTA-1, catalase, SOD, and GPx increased in mucin-treated cells. Also, these antioxidant genetic markers were up-regulated in CACO-2 cells by treatment with mucin extract. Gene expression levels (2 ^-ddct ) of tumor suppression genes (p53, Rb, APC, and PTEN) in both HepG-2 and CaCO-2 cells were increased in mucin extract-treated cells. Conclusion: The present study highlighted the anti-oxidant and the anti-cancer activities of the mucin extracted from E. desertorum snails´ mucus that could attract attention to such natural product as a possible source of therapeutic compounds against liver and colon cancers.

Cisplatin (Cis) is a chemotherapeutic drug that has been used in the treatment of various types of cancers. However, the drug showed various toxic side effects on vital organs. This study aims to investigate the hepato-renal protective effect of Eremnia desertorum eggs powder (EDEP) in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) bearing mice treated with Cis. Five groups of female Swiss albino mice were allotted as follows: Group (Gp1) served as a negative control, Gp2-Gp5 had inoculated intraperitoneally (i.p) with 1×10 6 EAC cells/mouse. Then, Gp2 was left without treatment as a positive control (EAC-bearing mice). After 24 hours, Gp3, and Gp4 had injected i.p. with Cis (2 mg/kg) EDEP (500 mg/kg) daily for 7 consecutive days, respectively. Gp5 was injected with a combination of Cis/EDEP as in Gp3 and Gp4. All treated groups were sacrificed at day 12, and the percentage of the body weight changes (%b.wt), tumor indices, haematological and biochemical parameters, and antioxidant /oxidant biomarkers as well as histological alterations of liver and kidney tissues were investigated. The results showed that the % b.wt changes were increased in EAC-bearing mice and EAC-bearing mice that were treated with EDEP. While, the treatment of EAC-bearing mice with Cis decreased the % b.wt changes. The treatment of EAC-bearing mice with a combination of Cis/EDEP led to an improvement in AST, ALT, urea, creatinine, antioxidant enzyme activities, and ameliorated the histopathological toxicities in the liver and kidneys in EAC-bearing mice.

Snail mucus is composed of bioactive compounds thought to have different biological properties for the treatment of some skin problems. Although Helix aspersa mucus is used in several cosmetic products, a detailed characterization of Eremina desertorum mucus composition and its biological activities is still missing. Mucus extracts (MEs) from H. aspersa and E. desertorum were prepared and tested for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities with their potencies in wound healing. Also, chemical characterization was performed by GC–MS analysis. Results showed that ME of E. desertorum gave higher inhibitory activity against resistant strains related to burn wound infections compared to ME of H. aspersa. Additionally, it revealed a significant anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, we found that ME of E. desertorum lacked cytotoxicity and was able to significantly induce cell proliferation and migration through up-regulation of TGF-β1 and VEGF gene expression. Our results suggested that MEs of E. desertorum have higher biological effects than H. aspersa, which are attributable to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory activities, cell proliferation and pave the way for further investigating its potential effect as a human therapeutic agent.
