Monocyte chemotaxis in patients with nonseminomatous testicular carcinoma

Abstract: The chemotactic responsiveness of blood monocytes was tested in 16 patients with nonseminomatous testicular carcinoma before, during, and after chemotherapy. All the patients initially had monocyte chemotaxis within the normal range. No correlation with the histology of the tumor, the clinical stage, or the presence in serum of alpha-fetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotropin was observed. Plasma from the patients did not inhibit the chemotaxis of normal monocytes, and serum from the patients contained no ch… Show more

“…In addition, an in vivo study has reported impaired blood monocyte chemotaxis in cancer patients $20 hours after receiving cisplatin at 20 mg/m 2 i.v. Â 1 (Nielsen et al, 1985). On the basis of these studies and our results, the quick onset of chemotaxis and phagocytosis inhibition by cisplatin could explain a lack of functioning monocytes in the area of drug uptake and subsequently a lower NP CL.…”

“…ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT 16 secretion in plasma, but co-administered carboplatin may influence the interaction between PLD and chemokine systems as reported previously 30 . No associations were observed between released doxorubicin AUCs and all chemokine AUCs (data not shown).…”

“…Kleinerman & Zwelling (4) reported that cisplatin enhanced spontaneous monocyte-mediated cytotoxicity in patients with ovarian cancer during displatin-containing chemotherapy. In contrast, we recently have shown that monocyte chemotactic responsiveness is markedly inhibited by cisplatin in vitro (7) and in vivo during cisplatin-containing chemotherapy (9). Although in vitro investigations of cisplatin showed no effect on monocyte phagocytosis and killing of C. albicuns (7), it is still possible that in vivo administration of the drug is partly responsible for the impairment of monocyte function in our patients during therapy.…”
