Monetary valuation of forest ecosystem services in China: A literature review and identification of future research needs

Abstract: We propose a review of empirical studies dealing with the monetary valuation of forest ecosystem services in China. The analysis focuses on: assessing methodological differences between studies; highlighting the variation of monetary values across different ecosystem service types; and identifying and discussing future research needs. Based on a systematic search, our data set consists of 12 studies published in peer-reviewed journals in English, dealing with 72 forest ecosystem services. Our results suggest t… Show more

“…A number of non-market valuation methods, including Revealed Preference (RP) and State Preference (SP) methods, have been developed [9,13]. Studies using these non-market valuation methods have assessed global and regional ES and their contribution to human well-being [1,7,[14][15][16][17]. Compared to the RP methods (e.g., production-oriented valuation, replace cost method, hedonic prices method), the SP methods use hypothetical scenarios involving ES to elicit individuals' responses to ES improvements and observe their behavior of interest [9,18].…”

“…As such, ES valuation refers to the process that measures the value of ecosystem services in monetary units [5]. The ES valuation would be undoubtedly an important foundation and tool for the decision-making of ecosystem management [5][6][7][8][9]. Thus, to make effective tradeoffs between different management strategies, the decision makers first need to value ES to understand their economic effects [9,10].…”

“…Another difficulty lies in quantifying the TVES. The TVES is often calculated as the simple sum of ES values (D'Amato et al 2016), without taking into consideration neither the analysis of trade-offs nor the competitive and complementary nature of ES (Ninan & Inoue 2013).…”

“…There is no national standard of indicator systems particularly at county level as a variety of case studies have not been validated by policy practice, which calls for future work in this area. D'Amato et al (2016) argued that there is the issue of distinguishing between stocks and flows of ecosystem services [44]. The stock is the amount of ecosystem assets at a given point of time, and it is measured as a physical quantity; a flow is measured as a production during a certain assessment period.…”

“…The valuation methods employed for soil conservation are perhaps the most varied across different studies in China [44].…”
