Modulation of Reparative Regeneration and CD117 Expression by Liver Cells after Partial Hepatectomy in Mice

Abstract: The effects of 3-aminophthalhydrazide and carrageenan on reparative regeneration and expression of CD117 by liver cells after partial hepatectomy were studied in mice. 3-Aminophthalhydrazide stimulated regeneration of the liver and increased the count of CD117(+) hepatocytes. By contrast, carrageenan inhibited liver reparation and CD117 expression.

“…The level of liver SCF mRNA was upregulated from the 24th hour to the 7th day (Meng et al, 2012). The number of c-kit + hepatocytes increased after PH, including medium and high staining intensity (Yushkov et al, 2011). In addition, exogenous SCF promotes the proliferation of primary hepatocytes in humans and mice (Meng et al, 2012).…”

“…While the proliferation of hepatocytes is inhibited, KIT-mediated signal transduction activates oval cells which then produce hepatocytes and bile epithelial cells (BECs) (Matsusaka et al, 1999). Besides, c-kit is expressed in oval cells and BECs (Fujio et al, 1996), whereas only 20% of hepatocytes located mainly at the periportal and pericentral regions express c-kit with a weak staining intensity (Yushkov et al, 2011). Moreover, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) are known to express c-kit (Luna et al, 2004).…”

“…There are three types of carrageenan based on number of sulphated group per biopolymer unit i.e., k-carrageenan (one sulphated group, KC), i-carrageenan (two sulphated groups, IC) and π-carrageenan (three sulphated groups, πC) [14,15]. Carrageenans are mainly employed in the food processing industry and for medical applications [16,17,18,19,20,21]. In food processing, carrageenans are used as water-based gels (such as cakes, desserts, and jellies), in dairy products (such as puddings and ice-cream), and as additives to improve the texture of cooked food.…”
