Modification of Poly(vinyl chloride) Substrates via Schiff's Base for Photochemical Applications

Abstract: Modification of poly(vinyl chloride) surface was achieved via introducing a new Schiff base containing 1,2,4‐triazole ring system to the polymer backbone. The new Schiff base containing 1,2,4‐triazole ring and the resulted homogenous polymer (PVC‐L) was characterized using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. Copper chloride was then added to coordinate with homogenous polymer to form PVC‐L‐CuII. The UV stability of the modified polymer was tested under long periods (300 h) of UV‐irradiation. The morpholog… Show more

“…Thermoplastic polymers, even those specials such as the engineering polymers, experience aging during its operating lifetime. Polymer aging is a time-dependent process that may have physical and/or chemical origins [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Chemical aging involves chemical changes, e.g., chain scission, crosslinking, and oxidative reactions, which may modify the polymer molecular weight distribution.…”

“…S4). The FTIR spectrum of the PVC-co-P(DEHT-HA) copolymer shows characteristics absorption peaks of the two constituent polymers: 3000-2900 cm -1 (C-H stretching vibration), 1725 cm -1 (C=O of ester group of P(DEHT-HA)), 1547 cm -1 (triazole, C=N, of P(DEHT-HA)), 1439 cm -1 (δCH2 of PVC), 1252 cm -1 (δCH of PVC), 1193 cm -1 (ʋC-O of P(DEHT-HA)), 952 cm -1 (ʋCH2 of PVC), and 691 cm -1 (ʋC-Cl of PVC) [43,44].…”

“…The PVC infusion catheter still had good inhibitory effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa after 72 h. [9] Palencia chemically modified PVC films with amino groups of dimethylamine and 1-bromoethane respectively. The results showed that the content of cationic PVC was $15% and had antibacterial activity and satisfied hemolytic property (hemolysis $7%) [10] ; (2) antimicrobial agents incorporation throughout the volume of PVC matrix. [11] The PVC film prepared by Lilian with quercetin and silver nanoparticles has a good inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria.…”

“…Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is an important thermoplastic material on account of its low cost and versatility [1][2][3] and is one of the most widely used medical polymers for healthcare, treatment, and diagnosis. It offers superb anti-corrosion, kink-proof, transparency, and affordability, therefore is the top choice in catheter, intravenous/ endotracheal tube and blood bag manufacture.…”
